My students will be spending time learning all about Gordon Parks, his life, his art and how he is an inspiration to people from all different walks of life. As we all know, it is not simply enough to study about an influential figure from history, you must practically apply what you learned in a meaningful context. Students today think a picture is something simple, a funny moment captured on your cell phone quickly forgotten. But those who have studied the art of photography understand that there can be a whole different level of meaning beyond the surface. For this project, students will be tasked with taking pictures that represent their life in the hopes of conveying thematic messages similar to how Gordon Parks utilized photography to send his message. I hope the students will be able to develop a love of the art of photography through this project.
