Students will read historical documents, research the war, read this novel, read poetry, watch a documentary, and create then their own documentary from an interview with a family member or community member who experienced the Vietnam War in a various capacities. Some examples of interviews have been grandfather's who served, parents who lost sons, soldiers who experienced, etc. The contacts the students make when exploring this topic is extremely valuable and memorable. The students are creating and documenting another's life experience. The novel, The Things They Carried, by Tim O"Brien, is rich in language and helps students to experience the surrealism of what it must be like to be at war.
