As a part of a recent persuasive writing project, students were asked to create a product proposal and present it to the class. Two of my male students suggested ball chairs and flexible seating options to help students focus. They did such a great job with their proposal that the class was convinced and so was I!
Developmentally, sixth graders have a difficult time sitting for the entire 95 minute long classes we have at our school. Many of my students have special needs and desire movement or varied seating choices during this block of time. Often students will ask to sit on the floor or against a wall so that they may stretch out and be comfortable as they read, write, and collaborate.
My students need flexible seating options to encourage focus and to enhance the environment for reading and writing. With these seating options they'll have some movement choices and be begging to get to work! As my very persuasive advertisers explained in their proposal, "Instead of people wanting to wander the room every three seconds, they will be so comfortable and focused that they won't even think about getting up to go talk to a friend."
