Access to classic novels in genres that students study is crucial. Oftentimes, standard curriculum only exposes students to one classic worth, often outdated and uninteresting to students. Students have asked me what books I am interested in and also to explore genres that interest them that are not included in the curriculum. This project would bring those stories, classic and modern, to their hands.
I have enjoyed allowing students to have Book Clubs at the end of the year, once testing frenzy is over, and allowing them to explore books that intrigue them. Many of my students have not been allowed to express curiosity and have also had the most limited exposure to literature than any other groups of students. It is very important to me to teach students how to find stories that they connect with-but I need the stories to be able to share with them!
I am requesting three copies of each book from these major genres: magical realism, realistic fiction, autobiographies and drama. Students would be able to read their selected books in book club with two other students who share their same interests.
