I have the privilege of supporting a group of seventh grade students who are not reading at grade level. These students are only a few years away from high school where they will not be able to handle the curriculum if they are unable to comprehend what they read. This puts them at risk for not completing their high school education. In order to address their reading gap, my students are part of an intense intervention program that develops their reading comprehension skills. The program is computer based and consists of three stations: working on the computer, reading independently, and time in small group with me. Some students are working diligently to make up the gap in their reading ability, while others lack personal motivation. I work hard every day to try to engage all of them in learning. It is a both a great joy and a great challenge to support these precious students.
