As a middle school math teacher, I believe for my students to become an abstract thinking student it is essential to get the basic arithmetic operations (foundation skills) stronger. To do that, the best pedagogy I have seen that very well worked with my students are getting them hands-on activities. Students who are presented with the opportunity to use manipulatives reported to me that they are more interested in math than before. With the very limited fund by our district due to the budget cut, we have provided with few manipulatives. For most of the common core standards, we don't have any manipulatives which makes it complicated for my concrete level thinkers. Fractions can be tricky, having a fraction tile activity can really help students to visualize key concepts. I try to pull out all my hardest math problems and even dividing up into teams for a little friendly competition can positively affect my students work, demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
