Out with the old and in with the new! I am ever grateful for the classroom items I inherited when I started teaching kindergarten. One of these items was our rug. It was probably passed on to a few teachers before me. The rug has been sat on, stepped on, laid on, be used as a sand collector from recess, and even had some unmentionable things happen on it. The kindergarten rug is the center for learning. In our classroom, the rug is where our learning begins each day. It is where we conduct class business, calendar, read-alouds, show and tell, movie time, and games. It is one of the first things children see each day. In my mind, the rug becomes the place where children feel comfortable sharing and gain a sense of community within the classroom. I chose this specific rug because of its simple design. I love the concept that each child can have their space on the rug with the defined borders for each letter of the alphabet. I also appreciate the cognitive feature of the rug. Every item in my classroom has a purpose - whether cognitive or emotional. This rug fulfills both. It is inviting, clean and encourages learning each time the children sit on it. I strive for a classroom that is clean, safe and welcoming to my students. I feel a new rug would benefit my classroom each and every day.
