My students struggle with reading and often become so used to failure. Many do not have a single book in their homes or rarely do they even see someone read. My students may have had remedial reading for years and they are feeling like they never succeed. Many have not seen the benefits of books as the people they know work hard to simply keep food on the table. Books seem like a chore since why keep doing what is so frustrating. Their elementary teachers may have given them easy books, but how can you feel good about yourself when you see someone 5 years younger carrying the same book. Their self-esteem is shot and reading seems hopeless. My students are at the age when they are beginning to make choices about their future. Some do not look too far ahead, and I work to change their perception about the possibilities that they truly have. But, they have this spark and enthusiasm somewhere in them. When I read to them, it surfaces and I know if they continue to read they will find success.
