Elementary music class is a place of happiness, exploration, creativity, and fun. We sing, play recorders, bang on drums, beat sticks, and learn music theory. However, I do not want music to be just a 50 minute break from Math, Science, and Language. I want to develop musical skills that will enhance a students life with a lifetime of playing music. The Ukulele is the perfect instrument to open young students to a world of music. It is an instrument singers will enjoy because they accompany their own singing. It is a good starting place for future guitarists. It is a good way to teach music theory and chord progressions. The ukulele is easy enough to give students quick and positive success to build self-confidence. Especially important for my students, is its affordability.
