It is crucial for students to have easy access to contemporary independent reading material by authors from a range of different backgrounds. Reading helps students think critically and improves reading comprehension skills, which is beneficial in across all curriculum areas. And the benefits of independent reading do not end in the classroom. Students take the skills they have honed through reading into adulthood and, in turn, into the workforce and society. Additionally, recent studies in a variety of disciplines have linked the reading of fiction specifically with measurable increases in empathy. Please consider donating to my classroom library! My classroom library is the starting point for many of our students. I try to maintain a library of contemporary titles where people from a diverse range of backgrounds are represented.
