My students love reading most when they get to do it together. They love doing it as a class and helping each other in small groups. When we share a novel and compare thoughts about conflict, character analysis, structure, vocabulary, history, and fiction students are highly engaged. Because I teach students on different reading levels the smaller chapter books allow them to engage in reading on their level as well as reading a grade level novel with the whole class. Each student needs a copy to follow along and to also use for completing reading work. Having their own copy, students are also able to work with the text at their own pace. These different text also allow my students to see exemplar writing examples. I have three classes of over 20 students each, so these books will get used a lot; we need to have enough copies for a class so they can last as long as possible.
