Many of my students struggle with self-control and self-regulation in the classroom setting. Currently, I have an eighth grade student that has fallen out of his chair multiple times. I feel that he needs more stimulation and movement than he is currently getting in a traditional school setting with traditional seating. I want comfortable and flexible seating options that encourage movement and focus in my middle school reading/writing workshop classroom. I strive to encourage my students to learn how to focus, and also gain independence, through choice. I feel that flexible seating options will encourage self-regulation, independence, and focus. Research on flexible seating is accruing. Some of the immediate benefits of flexible seating include burning calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture.
