My ten and eleven year old students are a mix of many cultures and they attend a high-poverty school district. Most students' parents work in local factories. Many of these young children don't have any heroes to aspire to. It is a challenge to get them to want to read non-fiction. Most of our school resources are centered around topics that aren't at a high-interest level for them. In addition, I've witnessed that the Hispanic students tend to segregate themselves from the Caucasian students during social times (lunch, recess, school assemblies, etc.) I want to build an environment where students can appreciate and embrace a variety of cultural backgrounds.
