Our unit on the Hudson River focuses on concepts relating to ecology. In order for my students to build their background knowledge, they need nonfiction texts that cover a variety of these ecological concepts to immerse them in the content. We will start out the unit with immersion reading with these new library books and create teaching tools to demonstrate our new knowledge. From there, we will continue the inquiry cycle and begin specialized research on the Hudson River ecosystem. The end product for the project will be a coffee table book about the Hudson River ecosystem. Each group in the class specializes in a specific organism and creates a chapter for the book that looks at how their organism has been impacted by the invasion of the zebra mussel.
