We are an inner city school and I am the art teacher. I see 650 students every week. I have two separate rooms in two different buildings. One building/classroom is strictly for primary students (K-3). The art classroom is focused around different countries of the world. Each table is a different country and throughout the year, students learn about the art and culture of these places. We begin the year making "passports" in order to travel to around the world. For example, one week, we may read a Chinese folktale about dragons and then create our own Chinese dragon puppets. Students are excited and intrigued. Sadly, very few students at our school have ever left the south side of Chicago and the opportunity to "travel" even within the classroom is magical to them.
