My students attend a Title I school and come from a low socio-economic background. They have had very few experiences when they begin school and we spend a lot of time building background in every subject. It's difficult to describe a baseball diamond if a child has never attended a baseball game. Imagine trying to describe a concept such as matter and having to explain what a gas is. Having concrete items in science makes it easier to explain the experiments when the students have something to actually hold in their hands.
