The library media center uses story time as a method to promote reading, books, and literacy. In order to get students to want to read a book, we must first engage them and grab their attention. Read alouds and booktalks are ways that we try to hook them to a book. Another method for promoting literacy is storytelling! Storytelling encourages children to tell their own stories. They can connect to their own experiences while promoting language and literacy development. An easy way to get students to tell stories is through the help of a puppet. Puppets make it easier for children to speak aloud in front of their peers. They forget that they are speaking to a group and they focus on the character of the puppet. Puppets are a tool to create a safe place for children. As a new school, we are without any puppets and manipulatives for storytelling. Money was not budgeted for these items in the construction project. Books were the priority, but not the tools needed to help promote books and literacy. Librarians will all agree that puppets are an essential tool for a children's library media center!
