My 9th grade language arts classroom would like a set of "Long Way Down" by Jason Reynolds. This novel is told in poetry form and would be used to help teach poetry to students in a contemporary way. The story is told in short narrative verse and looks at teenage gun violence, which brilliantly takes place in sixty seconds. This is a crucial sixty seconds where the teenage narrator has to make a moral decision that will impact his future. The themes, page line-breaks and fast paced story will relate to even the most reluctant reader. In addition, it is important to expose students to diverse authors and books. This book is relevant- this book is now- this book is needed. By donating to our classroom, my students will be reading diverse books with a theme every kid can relate to and will in turn inspire them to write their own poetry.
