When students have the freedom to choose where they are going to sit, it leads to greater focus and engagement. Research shows that flexible seating helps students develop the ability to self-monitor, gives them a sense of ownership for their learning, and keeps them engaged. Flexible seating will allow my students to find seating that keeps them motivated, fits their bodies, and builds metacognition. Floor cushions, bean bag chairs, and crate seats give students options to sit in groups or independently and to find a style of seat that is comfortable for them. Students who focus better when standing can use stools for temporary seat breaks when needed. Area rugs designate areas for floor seating and provide space for whole-class instruction. When students move on to higher grades and eventually to college, they will be studying in many different environments. As my students experiment with seating arrangements at this age, they will develop the metacognition to recognize what works well for them and will, in turn, strengthen their independence as learners.
