This kit explores an emerging trend in molecular biology and brings bioinformatics to the classroom in an accessible manner. Students take a new approach to taxonomy using DNA "barcodes"—short, unique DNA sequences—to learn about the biodiversity of plants, mammals, fish, or insects. In class, we will be looking specifically at seafood on offer at some of our local grocery stores in order to unlock, through DNA barcoding, secrets about whether seafood producers are delivering the product they claim to be. In completing this project, students will create a report on the sustainability of local fisheries in order to inform the public.
