What 7 year old doesn't like to draw? With these materials I will be able to improve my students fine motor skills, their ability to learn to focus and teach them about symmetry and spatial relationships. I sketch with my students 2-3 times a week, for approximately 20-25 minutes at a time. I put 3-4 items up on the screen, and they can try all of them or just one! Now, we use just regular #2 writing pencils and recycled paper. Pencils specifically made for sketching have much softer lead, which makes it easier for the kids to erase and shade their drawings. Specialized paper also have these same benefits, and a real gummy eraser to help with shading and perspective. Ans an electric pencil sharpener is a must with 26 students. Each child will keep his or her sketching pad in their cubby, here at school. Pencil and gummy eraser will be stored in their pencil box only to be used for sketching. It's so important to develop fine motor skills at this age. I have noticed my students handwriting has improved ever since I started sketching with them. Incorporating my math standards (symmetry, spatial relations) is an obvious fit when it comes to sketching. And what 7 year old doesn't need to practice focusing on the task at hand. Most importantly, these skills will transfer to other subject areas of their education and home life too!
