To differentiate my classroom library I want to include more books that reflect the diversity of not only our class and school but our community as a whole. Our class is made up of a variety of students with a variety of socioeconomic, racial, and religious backgrounds, and they are excellent readers who would benefit from the inclusion of more diverse literature in the classroom. Readers have the right and need to see themselves in the books they read. According to the National Council for Teachers of English, diverse books in classrooms can not only help diverse students see themselves in literature but can open up all students to other world views and unfamiliar circumstances- building empathy and understanding among peers. When students see themselves in their books--not just obscure characters with no similarities to the lives they lead--they are more inclined to read more and with more engagement. My students are going to be thrilled to read books with characters and stories that reflect their own lives. Join me in making it happen!
