My students are amazing kids who have both academic and attention struggles. They put out amazing effort in class, but the lack of attention and focusing abilities deters them from the task at hand.
Giving students the necessary technology to enhance their focus and attention is a key piece to their academic achievement and their social functioning.
The students that have piloted the Fitbit option have shown great growth in their ability to determine when they need a Breathing Break and whether they need 2 minutes or 5 minutes. For my student group, this is a huge undertaking that they are doing a spectacular job at. When they are able to decide when they need to refocus with the tools given, they are able to return to the academic tasks significantly quicker. This also allows my attention to remain on the student group and lessons without having to stop and redirect back to the task.
At this point, I am only able to give 2 students the ability to work on this skill. By funding this project, six of my students will have the chance to gain this skill and self navigate in the small group special education setting, as well as their whole group general education setting.
