First graders need to focus to learn new concepts and demonstrate their understanding, and sometimes that involves sitting! This can be challenging when their little bodies and minds require motion, or when they are easily distracted by others in close proximity. Being restless and fidgety can often interfere with academic progress. That's why having several different options to accommodate student comfort preferences has been shown to increase engagement and academic success. Having wobble stools in our classroom will provide an outlet for children who find sitting difficult while completing assignments. Children who find it difficult and distracting to work at a table with classmates can use a floor cushion to find a quiet nook to work in. Some children prefer to lay down and work on a cushion, while others wish to have a comfy chair in a secluded spot.
