I taught for ten years before I decided to stay home with our children. Next fall, I will be teaching first grade. My goal is to have a variety of books, both fiction and nonfiction to fill my classroom library. These books will be used during children's free reading time in our literacy block. It is one of the few times during the day that they are able to choose something of their interest, go to a quiet reading nook in our room, and enjoy a book. I strongly believe the more exposure children have to texts of their interest, the more knowledge they will gain. Having a variety of both fiction and nonfiction texts in my classroom is important. Many of our students have been through a lot in their young lives. Most of them have never read a book before they step foot into our school. It is one of my many goals to let them be exposed to as much reading of their interest as possible during this time in their day. To have quality text in their classroom is key! Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my "why." Teaching our youth is planning for our future and it is my passion to do just that.
