A typical day for my middle school ELL (English Language Learner) students consists of 7 classes. Those classes include science, social studies, language arts, math, ESL (English Second Language), and related classes such as art, music, physical education, leadership corp, technology, or family and consumer science. Each of these classes has their own unique vocabulary and academic content that is difficult for a Non-English speaker. Can you imagine what it is like to sit in classes all day and constantly try to figure out what the teacher is saying or wanting you to do? With the opportunity to use Chromebooks the students can bridge some of those gaps. Each student has a Google account and has access to Google Classroom. They are able to research information and build background knowledge on any subject and it will be automatically stored on their Google account. They can build their own virtual vocabulary notebook and have access to it on any Chrome device. They can utilize images, translators, videos, online books, and practice sites to enhance their learning and help them acquire English faster. They can also use sites to review for tests and practice grammar skills. Another important factor for language acquisition is that ELL students acquire BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills) much faster than CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency). Due to this factor, many times the students can begin to respond orally before having the ability to respond in writing. Use of this technology will assist them in developing their writing skills since they can use the microphone to dictate their response in Google Docs on their Chromebook and see what it looks like written. Chrome Extensions provide additional support for grammar, definitions, and pronunciation. Tech for these ELL teens opens a whole new world in their pursuit of English.
