The 2017-2018 school year brought about a new offering for our students. On weekday mornings, with a pass from their homeroom teacher, students can visit the school library to read-aloud a book while having their hair combed and/or braided. This offering is called Braids, Bowties & Books, here at our school. The materials needed to sustain this offering are: combs, hair ties, bobby pins, hair products, bookmarks & hand sanitizing gel. Students get to keep their comb and hair ties, not only to avoid germ-sharing, but also so that they have these tools to utilize at home. In addition, each visitor gets to take a bookmark as a small memento. Students look forward to sharing in conversation, literature and positive self-image building with a caring, trusted adult. While most students opt to read while having their hair done, some students opt to share in conversation. These speaking and listening skills, paired with good hygiene and fostering positive self-image have proven to be helpful to so many of our students. The items requested through this project will help to sustain our Braids, Bowties & Books program. While the items are namely disposable, they are offered to students through an experience that fosters lasting results in reading, speaking and listening, cleanliness, hygiene and positive self-image.
