As we build our classroom community, it is important that my students have this rug to use as a space to come together as a class. Congregating as a group is a daily occurrence in our classroom. Every morning we sit in a circle and share about ourselves and our lives, in order to solidify our relationships as friends, students, and teacher. We come together in this fashion to discuss important issues, share vulnerably with each other, hold congress on how to solve problems within the classroom, and to laugh and smile the worries away. Sitting as a group during our literacy mini-lessons also helps students to hone in their focus and attention, with fewer distractions. This allows me to have close proximity to them as they grapple with new information. They are able to focus on the speaker, manage their behavior and follow along with the topics of the lesson without the distractions of their desks and materials. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve the level of comfort and engagement my students experience within the classroom, but you will also be contributing towards our continued mission of creating a welcoming and loving classroom community. Having a designated classroom rug for group meetings and activities will instill a deeper sense of community within my students, and will remove some of the barriers to their learning.
