The need for affordable housing options for refugees is a global issue. There are many cities that are looking into tiny houses as practical and affordable options for housing for homeless, veterans, and refugees. Why not give my 6th graders the opportunity to learn about a global issue and also present a learning opportunity for them to apply their geometry skills as they design a tiny house? My 6th graders are caring, problem-solvers who excel when presented with project-based learning opportunities especially when they are in the role of change-makers. My students will increase their understanding of immigration and refugees through the variety of short stories and the read-aloud Refugee. The books will build empathy and a strong desire to build a tiny house that someone their age may live in if they were seeking safety and shelter in another country. Students will research organizations that build houses for homeless, veterans, and/or refugees. They will be challenged to design a tiny house while applying area, perimeter, volume, and design elements. The tiny house instructional book will be one of our in-class research tools and resources as they work on floor plans and designing the space. The paper, tape dispensers, scissors, and tape will allow us to design and redesign the building structure and create scale sized living essentials such as beds, chairs, and appliances. The pentominoes will allow us a method to explore and reinforce the math concepts in a hands-on manner. Providing learning opportunities for my students that also encompasses a global issue will help them realize their own potential to become a change-maker that betters our world.
