I work in a school district where many parents are unable to help their students practice their reading at home. For many of my students they are behind in their reading because they do not have books at home and do not have help outside of the school day. Consequently, my classroom has a large focus on reading. I want my students to fall in love with reading. We emphasize the adventures you can go on, the people you can meet and what you can learn about....all without leaving the classroom! In our classroom we spend hours learning about what kinds of book interest us and if there are any series we enjoy. We have "stickered" our books with different colors to indicate different genres. However, the books are getting lost in the shelves. The colored bins would allow us to separate books into genres and keep series together. Students will be engaged in their daily reading by being able to find books that excite them. In addition to a lack of reading materials, my students need durable classroom furniture. The tables that my students have are too small, do not provide enough room for their materials and need to be tightened on a regular basis. This new table would be large enough to fit several students and would be durable enough to handle their materials. Similarly, students do not have enough shelf space for the materials I have provided for them. This new shelf would allow me to put materials in a spot that would be accessible for each student.
