I am working on obtaining a classroom set of ukuleles for my upper grade students to play. This project is a step in that direction. Ukuleles will help students synthesize and apply music theory skills through the creativity of applying them to an instrument. Through ukulele instruction students will learn about beat, harmony, melody, rhythm, and tempo while taking ownership of their learning by doing. The ukulele also helps students develop hand-eye coordination as well as independent movement of fingers. If students eventually want to learn the guitar or other stringed orchestra instruments in the future, starting with a ukulele often makes the process easier and less frustrating. This is especially true of my 5th graders who will be going on to middle school next year and will need to select an instrument should they choose orchestra as an extracurricular. Regardless, this is an amazing opportunity to build students' confidence in learning to play an instrument and love music in a whole new way!
