My students will use these materials to learn independently and at their own pace. They will use light table to develop critical thinking skills in Math. They will extend, build and create patterns, sort objects by multiple attributes, count objects with one-to-one correspondence and work with geometric shapes to learn names and attributes. The Multiplication and Division Boards will provide my more advanced learners with the opportunity to move forward with skills appropriate for their interest and skill level. The light table in particular, supports not only math but scientific inquiry as well. Children will work with natural materials found in the outdoor environment around our school such as plant life, leaves, seeds, pods, and more. They will can observe, draw what they see, and learn from the many questions that arise from their study. They are active researchers who strive to understand the world around them. The children also develop their language and literacy skills as they work at the light table. By using interesting natural and man-made materials on this specialized table they study the materials themselves but also scientific qualities of light and shadow, translucent and opaque, and luminescence of color. The children become very excited to see the mysteries of a leaf open up before them as they see the veins spreading through its shape. Imagine their awe in seeing the color of the leaf glowing as the light permeates its cells. It is through this kind of work that children develop broader vocabulary, ask deeper questions, and stronger engagement in work that is intriguing to them. Developing stronger language, literacy, math and scientific thinking provide children with the skills they need to enter into more complex thinking and more complicated projects. They develop order, concentration, independence, self-control and coordination important to good learners.
