The population of my school has a majority of Native American students. Their cultural background comes from drumming for dancing/socializing, healing weather, horse songs and other ceremonies. Students grow up hearing and dancing to the drums. All of the traditional songs have been handed down through the generations by rote(hearing only). Every time they hear a drum they start to sing or dance in their traditional way. I want to continue to support their culture while also supporting their learning in musical concepts. Studies have shown that students who can identify rhythms in more than one way connect to them better. Using the drums will take the rhythms from clapping/patting to acting it out with drums.
