When students are finished with work, they are often asked to use their time reading or writing. These are valuable practices but students also need opportunities to express their creativity and ideas through art and manipulation. The mind of a second grader deserves time to create. I plan to provide students with time each day to make something. I hope that by using small letter beads and laces that they are able to wake up a part of their brain at school that may often lie dormant, and also practice fine motor skills and word building. Magnetic tiles are engaging and representative of architecture with three-dimensional building. I hope the magnetic building sticks not only lead to curiosity about forces and structural strength, but also lend moments of fun and expression. Moments that students may see as a break from the school work grind are actually valuable moments of learning - just in a different way.
