In my chemistry class, I require students to use interactive notebooks. They have a collection of graphic notes, lab write-ups, and practice problems that help lay the foundation of understanding all in their notebooks. Lately, students have been creating infographics that help them process and explain why everyday things work the way they do using concepts learned in class. To help the information stand out, I have suggested that students utilize gel pens. Since my students are mostly from low-income families, many are not able to afford their own set of gel pens to complete the assignments, I would like to provide these to students in my class. By having access to the pens in class, students are able to take real-time notes in color and not have to worry about finishing up later. I am hoping that by having these pens in class, the amount of students that take pride in their work will increase.
