My students have emotional disabilities. This often means they get to school after an hour long, loud bus ride and are angst ridden. They walk into my class after an hour of physical education where they have been surrounded by 75 other students in a gym full of noise and movement and are full of nervous energy. Both of these situations mean that my students require a room to decompress in, a room with a less stressful experience. That is the beauty of my SDEP classroom. Small class sizes allow for every student to find a tranquil space conducive for learning. To enhance this calming experience I encourage the use of alternative seating or work stations that support emotional stability and enhance learning styles. Some students find the comfort of a encompassing beanbag or bungee chair calming. Yet other students find the movement of a stability stool or disk soothing. Standing tables give students with nervous energy a place to stand and work versus using the traditional sit in one place desk method of learning. I am a first year teacher and my classroom is a work in progress. The addition of these standing carts and alternate seating options will help create a positive learning environment for students who often struggle to focus on the positive aspects of life and learning. Thank you for taking the time to consider enhancing the educational environment of my students.
