Giving students a choice of where to sit during independent work time as well as reading time will help their engagement. Students having the opportunity to choose seats helps students take charge of their own learning and make responsible choices. Right now students only have a few options for seating, such as under tables using clipboards, on the main carpet, and on their desks. When they have a choice in their seating, they typically work better than when they are at their desks. Student ownership in seating helps them feel physically and emotionally comfortable in the classroom, which in turn leads to higher engagement. The products that I have chosen will give my students a chance to feel comfortable and learn in a variety of different ways. It is costly but will be worth it for the students. I know the flashlights don't fit in, but they are also helping with student engagement. During Flashlight Friday reading, my students are always on task compared to other independent reading times. The flashlights are a valuable tool for keeping students excited about reading.
