My students come to school everyday with a passion and desire to learn. Given the inner city location of my school, some families are not able to purchase high quality children's books for their learners. I would like to connect my students to characters, stories and challenges that they can relate to. When students read and look at books with characters who look like themselves, they feel valued; their lives and stories are important. Many of the books that were donated to me or the classroom are wonderful, but lack diverse characters. Giving children more books opens endless possibilities for the young child's mind, but relating it to who they are, empowers them.
