"The more children read, the better readers they become" (Gambrell and Marinak). Students need to be reading, and reading often. Award winning books will stand the test of time: Newberry, Printz, Odyssey, Sibert Award Winner, Nutmeg, William C. Morris, Coretta Scott King. The list of awards for children's books / YA novels are endless. Students need novels that won these awards to experience great literature. "Having a well-stocked classroom library is the single most important factor influencing children's reading practices" (Pachtman and Wilson). These award winning books are marvelous pieces of literature - purchase them for my seventh grade students - it'll make a world of difference.
