As schools become more and more focused on test scores and results, it's important to remember that children need a place to be creative and share ideas. I want to give my students an opportunity to create and experiment every day. These materials will provide students with the opportunity to start their day experimenting with their creations, collaborating with others, sharing their ideas, and HAVING FUN! As students enter my classroom in the morning they get unpacked and put their belongings away to get ready for the day. While everyone is getting ready and settled, students work on a task to get their brain engaged and help them to get ready for the day. The materials funded by this project would be used by ALL of my students EVERY DAY for the first 20 minutes of their school day. Each table group will get a set of materials funded by this project. I will rotate the materials so that students stay excited and engaged each day in their task. For example, table one may get the Magna-Tiles on Monday and then get to explore with the Gear Builders on Tuesday. They will work together with their group to complete open ended task cards. The task cards vary from giving the students a problem to solve (ex. build something that would carry water from one town to another) to showing them a picture of something to build (ex. a robot). This helps students to build collaborative, creative, and problem solving skills all within the first twenty minutes of the day! I am trying to teach my students to take risks and be problem solvers. This project will provide my class with the materials to help foster those characteristics in each of my students.
