In our attempts to use our laptops more often in reading class, we have come to find that noise is becoming an issue. Students' research may include watching videos about a topic. Also, while using our online reading tool, CommonLit.org, some students use the "Read to Me" function that is allowed on the site. On several online programs, our students are also asked to repeat and/or speak into their laptops to register an answer. Because their mics are not made for the amount of noise traffic we create, this is nearly impossible. You can imagine how difficult it is to focus with as much noise traffic as we often create. We believe that noise is a good thing in our classroom; it means we are getting things done. However, we have found that it is difficult to listen to a story about Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech being read to us while we hear a TED Talk about black holes in space in the background.
