A kidney table allows for students to be within an arms reach of the teacher. The close proximity allows the teacher to focus every student, provide instant feedback and give redirection to students who would otherwise shift their learning. The students would not only feel close to their teacher, but close to their peers. Students would have space to work individually or as a team, thus building a sense of community; this is critical for students within special education who may feel "different" or struggle making and maintaining friendships. It would also allow for mixed-goal groups where students are targeting different skills. With a wide center, the kidney table allows the teacher to rotate from one student to the next providing explicit, individual instruction when needed. This table would significantly improve group instruction within my classroom. A kidney table can also be used for learning conferences with special education teams and families. It would be a valued resource for the learning of all students. A simple table can increase engagement and interaction needed to foster communicative growth! Please help my deserving students!
