Reading karate will encourage students to explore different genres and expand learning in exciting areas. The purchases from this project will provide new options for my students. For example, our library has very few STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) books available, and this grant will offer new materials. The non-fiction section is also lacking and new books will spark student interest. Elementary students are often 'stuck' in one area of literature because they are afraid to move outside the 'genre box.' By giving the students a competition and a reason to explore, many of them will be inspired to read new books in the library. Each genre will be represented by a different color of ‘belt.’ For example, when a student reads a S.T.E.M. book, a brown piece of yarn will be added to the student’s ‘mini-person.’ The students who collect all the reading belts will be awarded the Karate Champion Reading Award.
