I teach Sophomore English at Tucson High School. Sophomore curriculum includes world literature, and I dedicate a semester to African literature. In this unit we read the novel "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, Nelson Mandela’s speeches, and a variety of African proverbs. I am a film enthusiast, so I incorporate film into my lessons whenever possible. To kick off my African literature unit I have my students watch "The Gods Must be Crazy," a film from South African Director Jamie Uys. Last year, I read Trevor Noah’s book "Born a Crime" and I realized it would fit in my African Literature unit perfectly! The memoir, "Born a Crime," by comedian Trevor Noah, is new, is relevant, and my students will love it! This book chronicles Noah’s childhood growing up in post-apartheid South Africa. The title, "Born a Crime," references his mixed-race parentage, which was illegal at the time. Noah's writing is clear and the story telling is compelling. The perspective and humor are very accessible to all teenagers. Exploring Noah's teenage experiences will provide my students with a grounded, street-level, context for reading Nelson Mandela's speeches.
