I teach on a military base. The majority of our students live in base housing and have at least one parent in the military. My students are in second grade. They come with a wide range of abilities and experiences because of their military lifestyle. Adjustments can be overwhelming. They come in having left friends and family behind. At the same time mom or dad can be leaving for deployment or training. As a class they struggle when a classmate leaves and enjoy keeping in touch as pen pals or cyber buddies.
