My goal is for students to access different texts that are culturally diverse for our Identity Unit. Most of the books available in our classroom library and texts available in our current literature books are not about minority students. This novel, American Born Chinese, will help my students stay engaged and learn more about another culture because it details multiple perspectives from people that deal with cultural differences and stereotypes. This book will allow students to have class discussions about identity, family, and culture. American Born Chinese will also be a great pre-reading novel before my students write their own personal identity narrative.
