A common meeting area is an integral part of lessons today. It's where all the minilessons are taught for all subject areas from math, to reading, writing, science and social studies. It's where we listen to stories, share ideas, and grow into a family community. It's where we plan our kindness missions in which we secretly go around the school and community leaving small gifts and notes. Currently, my students are sitting on an old, worn carpet that has been around since the beginning of the time! Having an area rug to meet and gather on will provide a sense of coziness and warmth: something students need to be vulnerable and to take chances.
