As the school’s literacy specialist, it is my goal to create a school-wide reading culture, encouraging our students to be engaged and motivated readers. In order to develop this reading culture, I have created a Series Reading Program for our students. Evidence shows that when students read books from the same series or authors, they become familiar with the series’ characters and story structures. Students also build vocabulary knowledge by recognizing repeated words used in context and their reading comprehension improves as they read the familiar texts. The Series Reading Program works by students visiting different teachers’ or staff members’ classrooms and checking out books from the same series or author. In order to encourage student participation in our Series Reading Program, we need books with authors and characters that our diverse student population can relate to. Even though we were able to purchase some series titles to begin the program, we are in desperate need of additional books to accommodate our large student population. At this time, we have the full commitment of teachers and staff but just not enough series books to go around.
