My students are asked to perform a lot of seat work throughout their day. They have a very short recess and PE only twice a week. Many of my students' families do not allow the kids to play outside in their neighborhoods. My students are very active kids and need more! I have seen that my specific students are much better at focusing when they can wiggle! English learning is the first step towards all other learning. English language learning, and all learning in my opinion, is best when the learner is comfortable while practicing their skills. It takes the average ELL student approximately 7 years to be completely on grade level because there is so much underlying language needed for academic success. I don't want my students to be frustrated by the often long road ahead. Instead I want them confident and comfortable to work through this language acquisition and other challenges they will encounter during their lifetime. I feel that all movement is good for the body as well as for activating the mind. These seat modifications will help my students to wiggle their bodies and quietly kick their feet while working hard in ESOL.
