Our school has recently adopted a literature circle program for our reading time and I have already observed an enormous difference in my students' learning. Being in a rural town with a high poverty level, our students do not have much access to quality literature. Too many students are entering the 5th grade reading at a 2nd grade level, having never touched a chapter book. They don't understand the joy reading can instill, much less have the tools to pass state tests. The nearest libraries are very limited and the school library is a tad dated. We don't have much room for storing many hard copies of novels and being a new program and a poor district, we haven't been able to invest in many titles. I start as many as 5 students on a novel at a time so it can be difficult to get enough copies of desired titles. These Kindles would allow access to almost unlimited choices in literature as well as the ability to interact with books via highlighting and bookmarking tools. Because they are tablets I will be able to download apps such as dictionaries and Google Classroom to further enrich their education. I need a classroom set so that every student has the ability to use a tablet at a given time. There are so many benefits my students would gain from having access to these tools. My special needs and 504 students could use software to assist them, my g/t students would be able to perform enrichment tasks, we would be able to do research papers both in reading and social studies, not to mention just the experience of using technology on a daily basis will make these students more competitive with peers from more affluent backgrounds.
